General musings on film, craft beer & brewing, baseball, music and the otherwise mundane and sometimes irksome aspects of life that compel me to tap at the keys.

My Students

Each year, the Media Studies Program at Mercy College holds a showcase in which each concentration presents examples of student work. Since 2017, I have worked with my students to produce mini-documentaries to demonstrate the topics that they research and discuss throughout the semester. Here are a few examples.

My Classroom at Alamo Drafthouse

Since 2017, I have been fortunate to work the creative managers at Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY to program films relevant to my courses, allowing students to experience films in the manner in which they were intended to be seen—in a theater, on a large screen, with an audience. Discussions with the audience and my students are held at the conclusion of each screening.

Testimonials

For many, Hitchcock is and has been the very definition of 'cinematic auteur.' Steven DeRosa's book gives us fascinating insight into the collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and screenwriter John Michael Hayes, a collaboration that resulted in four of the master's finest films. The auteur did not work alone.

Curtis Hanson, Director, L.A. Confidential

With diamond clarity, Steven DeRosa defines the art, the joy, the rewards—and the hazards—of screenwriting for a cinematic genius like Alfred Hitchcock.

Joseph Stefano, Screenwriter, Psycho

John Michael Hayes wrote the screenplays for a quartet of Alfred Hitchcock’s perennially popular film classics. Steven DeRosa skillfully shows just how the works took shape and why Hayes must be ranked as one of Hollywood’s great writers.

Reflections on Winnebago Man

Reflections on Winnebago Man

It’s hard to believe that it was nearly fourteen years ago that I first became aware of Jack Rebney. I did this in the way that most people did, through a fiftieth or hundredth generation VHS compilation of outtakes and between-the-scenes footage that came to be known...

Will write for …

Will write for …

What can I say? I’ve been feeling pretty inspired lately, and so I’ve been doing a great deal of writing. Which is good. And it seems the more writing I do, the more I think about writing. And of course I’m thinking about all kinds of writing. Screenwriting,...
